Company Research Resources

About this checklist

Students in Professor Alison McKaig-Berliner's BU101 class are usually assigned a stock market investment project which requires choosing a publicly traded company, tracking that company's stock prices, and compiling a report about the company. This checklist focuses mainly on the parts of the assignment that require students to use library resources to find company information.

BU101 Stock Market Project Library Checklist

Did you...

  1. Choose a publicly traded company? A publicly traded company is a company that sells shares of itself on a stock exchange, like the NYSE. You can search for your company on CNN Business to determine if it’s publicly traded.
  2. Use CNN Business to find the price per share? You can get this information after the stock market closes at 4:00pm on Friday (check the date listed in your assignment).
  3. Use the databases with company profiles to locate information about your company? You can find company profiles in Hoover’s Company Records and Business Source Elite (MarketLine).
  4. Use any of the business databases listed on the Articles page to find additional information about your company? Other types of information include newspaper articles, press releases, or scholarly articles.
  5. Cite your sources appropriately in MLA format? You can find guidelines and examples of how to cite company research resources on the Citation Guidelines page.
  6. Make an appointment with a librarian to review your citations? Victoria Swanson is the Business Librarian, but any of the librarians can help you with reviewing your citations.
