Artificial Intelligence

Information about developing artificial intelligence technologies including generative AI and large language models (LLMs)

What is generative AI?

Much of the discourse about artificial intelligence since the release of ChatGPT has centered on "generative artificial intelligence" (aka gen AI), so called because it is able to create new data using predictive algorithms, rather than just analyze the dataset it learns from.

ChatGPT is a specific kind of gen AI called a "large language model" (LLM) that learns by processing huge amounts of textual data, often from the internet, and then generates new data in the form of text created using predictive algorithms. Although LLMs return remarkably human-like text, they are prone to "hallucinating," or generating false information.

There are other forms of generative AI capable of generating images, video, and music. On this page, explore resources that will help you better understand what gen AI can (and cannot) do, how it is being used today, and what it might be used for in the future.
