Caldwell University is rooted in the Catholic Dominican traditions and committed to promoting the Gospel message of truth. The Dominican Sisters of Caldwell, New Jersey founded Caldwell University as Caldwell College in 1939. Also known as the Order of Preachers, the Dominican Order was founded by St. Dominic de Guzman in the 13th century in France.
We embrace an 800 year Dominican heritage which seeks to bring about the message of truth and passion for God through the four pillars of prayer, study, community and service. No pillar stands alone but rather works in conjunction with the others to make the mission of promoting spiritual, intellectual and aesthetic growth a lived reality at Caldwell University. Caldwell University kicked off its celebration of the 800th Jubilee of the Order of Preachers with a Mass on November 11, 2015. In her opening remarks, Sister Patrice Werner, Prioress of the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Caldwell, stated, "The Jubilee is a celebration of the entire Dominican Family – friars, nuns, sisters, lay members, laity…. For Caldwell Dominicans, the celebration of these 800 years is also a renewed call to laudare, benedicere, praedicarae – to praise, to bless and to preach. We are proud and honored to be part of the worldwide Dominican Family, to claim as our own Dominic’s passion for truth."
