AH 212: World Art I

Getting started

Art history research is not always straightforward and can be frustrating at times. Unless you're researching a very popular piece of art, you may have a hard time finding scholarly articles about the piece you've chosen. But don't worry! Here are a few tips that might help:

  • Begin your research narrowly.  Search the databases and WorldCat for your specific piece of art.
    • ex. "Paul Signac" AND "Port of Rotterdam"
  • If you can't find much information, search for information about the artist(s).
    • ex. "Paul Signac"
  • If you are still having trouble finding information, search for information about the artist's style and/or the time period during which your piece was created.
    • ex. Pointillism; Neo-Impressionism
  • If you are having trouble, ask a librarian for help.  You may also want to contact your professor to ask for recommendations.
