CSE stands for the Council of Science Editors. CSE provides three ways to format in text citations. Check with your professor to see which system you should use.
1) citation–sequence
2) citation–name
3) name–year
References
The references list in your paper can be called: References, Cited References, Literature Cited, or Bibliography.
List only references you have cited in the text of your paper.
See each individual system in the box "Overview of systems for CSE" to learn how references are ordered.
Use a number in the in text citation to refer to numbered reference in your reference list.
References in your reference list are numbered and listed in the order they are cited in the text.
Example:
In text citation: Traumatic life events and PTSD are endemic among American civilians1.
End reference: 1. Kessler, RC, Sonnega A, Bromet E. Posttraumatic stress disorder in the National Comorbidity Survey. Arch Gen Psychiatry. 1995 Dec;52(12):1048-1060.
Use a number in the in text citation to refer to numbered references in your reference list
References in your reference list are ordered alphabetically by author's last name and then numbered.
Example:
In text citation: Traumatic life events and PTSD are endemic among American civilians22.
End reference: 22. Kessler, RC, Sonnega A, Bromet E. Posttraumatic stress disorder in the National Comorbidity Survey. Arch Gen Psychiatry. 1995 Dec;52(12):1048-1060.
This system is also known as the "Harvard System"
Use the author's last name and year of publication for in text citations
References in your reference list are ordered alphabetically by author's last name
Example:
In text citation: The NIH has called for a change in smallpox vaccination policy (Fauci 2002) that...
End reference: Fauci AS. 2002. Smallpox vaccination policy. N Engl J Med. 346(17):1319-1321.
