PS 101/PS 213: Exploring Psychology Research

This guide supports students in PS 101 and PS 213 to find peer-reviewed articles

Developing a Topic

Whether you have free reign to choose a topic or you need to define a topic for your work within thematic guidelines, choosing a topic is an important part of the process - for your coursework and for psychology research studies. Choosing a research topic you find interesting will make the assignment more engaging. Use the resources on this page to help you consider your topic.

Guiding Questions

If you have a broad topic that you are interested in, these questions might help you narrow it down to a more specific and manageable topic:

  • What specific elements of the topic are most interesting to you?
  • Why is this topic interesting to you?
  • Are you interested in how this topic impacts a certain geographic location? A particular community or group of people?

If you are not sure of a topic yet, consider these questions:

  • What is a topic you think is important?
  • What do you want to learn more about?
  • What would you be excited to tell others about?
