Introduction to Chicago and Turabian Styles

What is Chicago Style? What is Turabian?

The Chicago Manual of Style presents two basic documentation systems: (1) notes and bibliography and (2) author-date. In general,

  • Humanities scholars use the notes and bibliography system.
  • Scientists use the author-date system.

Chicago Style is sometimes called "Turabian Style" or "Chicago/Turabian." Kate Turabian's A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations is a guide that adapts Chicago Style for use specifically by students.
